Still Life is pleased to announce May 14th at 6pm, poet, anthologist and literary critic,  Mario Campaña will be giving an intimate reading  from a collection of poems "Aires de Ellicott City", composed during his residency here in Ellicott City, Maryland. Mario will begin reading in Spanish at 6:30 pm, followed by a reading in English by Shawn Westfall.

Shawn Westfall 
Born and raised in Indiana, Shawn Westfall is a performer of improvisational comedy, as well as the exclusive teacher of improvisational comedy at the DC Improv for the last 8 years. He is a professional voice-over artist, a writer and an editor. He holds an M.A. in English Literature from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Mario Campaña was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, in 1959, but has lived in Barcelona since 1992. He has also lived in Mexico, Glasgow and Paris. He is one of the most relevant Latin American poets of his generation.

It begins under the flower of peace, before the fall of the plum blossoms, before monks burning incense in Japanese temples, before the rising scents from scented kimono sleeves mixed with the fragrant incense of natural pine, cedar, lavender, and the flowers of the sun.

In the year 538 c.e. Buddhism was first introduced into Japan. Along with it across the ocean came statues of Buddhas, ancient Sutras, as well as incense. From that moment on, incense has been an inseparable part of Japanese history. Incense holds an invaluable role in Buddhist ceremonies and rites as well as in those of the Shinto shrines. Purifying the surroundings, it is reputed to be a method of bringing forth the Buddhist Alamkaraka (Realm of Adornment). It's use spread throughout the country for its purifying as well as medicinal properties.

The creation of incense is an extraordinarily delicate process. In the time-honored traditions of Jinkoya Sakubei, Baieido has dedicated itself to making incense for over 300 years. The method and recipes have been handed down from generation to generation in an unbroken secret oral tradition.

Kai Un Koh : Premium Meditation Incense 
Baieido was founded in Sakai City, Japan in 1657.
This ancient Japanese incense formula contains a very dense aloeswood and is highly resinous. Kai Un Koh is made from sandalwood, aloeswood, borneol camphor, clove and other Chinese spices. The sticks are a unique thick square design.

Kai un koh is translated as "Opening the Door to Bring Good Fortune." In the practices of meditation it has long been a goal to open the doorway back to our innate self. Buddhist Sutras refer to this as "knowing the self as it truly is."
